Michael Barrette

CRN (2009)

Washington, District of Columbia

Mike's key interests include environmental protection, sustainability, energy policy and community building.  Through volunteer efforts, Mike has founded or co-founded five different organizations, including the Capitol Hill Energy Cooperative, DC Solar United Neighborhoods, Capital Futbol Club (youth soccer), Friends of Watkins Rec Center, and Friends of Capitol Riverside Youth Sports Park.  Mike has helped more than 100 DC residents go solar, and he continues to advocate for solar and renewable energy incentives.  Mike is employed by the US Environmental Protection Agency, where he is a champion for transparency and open government -- establishing and managing the Enforcement and Compliance History Online site.  In addition to transparency projects, Mike has specialized in Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and RCRA policy-making -- with a specific focus on corporate and state program performance and accountability.  Mike is married and has three boys.  He enjoys playing soccer, holds a USSF "D" coaching license, and coaches a travel soccer team.  Bringing together his passion for sports and the environment, he has begun working on projects in DC that can expand green space for kids to play, create solar community gardens, and limit stormwater runoff by reclaiming unused parking lots for fields.
