Originally from New England, Josh has called Whidbey Island home since 2015 and now lives with his wife and son on formerly industrial forestland, where they practice regenerative forestry and farming. Over Josh’s 20-plus year career, he has held various roles in for-profit and nonprofit organizations, all with a focus on improving the health and resilience of human and natural communities. He currently directs The Center for Knowing Home, a fiscally sponsored project of the Whidbey Institute fostering a deep connection with nature and community through educational programs and initiatives. Knowing Home’s vision is to cultivate a future where humans live in reciprocity with the Earth—guided by wonder, rooted in place, and empowered to act with courage.

Josh’s work lives at the nexus of organizational leadership, sustainable community development, environmental planning and policy, natural resource management, and collaborative engagement. He currently serves as an appointee to the Washington State Department of Natural Resources' Forest Health Advisory Committee, the Island County Marine Resources Committee, and the Island County Salmon Recovery Technical & Citizens Committee, providing technical and policy guidance on natural and marine resource management to state and county government.

Josh holds an M.A. in Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning from Tufts University, a B.A. in Earth and Environmental Science from Wesleyan University, and has completed facilitation, mediation, and communication training through numerous institutions. In addition to his professional skills and experience, Josh brings a passion for equity, place-based community building, and contemplative practice and engagement.
