Christa Essig

Christa works as the liaison for food system issues between CDC's NCEH and Nutrition Branch. The work includes examining co-benefits of sustainable food systems for environmental and nutritional health. She also works for CDC's Go Green, Get Healthy workgroup to green worksite food services. Christa's graduate work was in Global Environmental Health, and thesis research was on pesticide exposure for organic and conventional farm worker children. At Emory University she served on the Sustainable Food Initiative Committee, started and managed Emory University's Farmers' Market, and worked as the Educational Garden Project Coordinator. Previous work includes as a Nutritionist for the social service food supplement program WIC, in electronics recycling, and in conducting research for a Community Food Assessment and pesticide exposure. Christa serves on the board of the Atlanta Local Food Initiative, Atlanta Community Garden Coalition, helped to start a farmers' market in her community, and was on the planning committee for the Southeast Bioneers conferences.
